Market catches fire - Tragedy strikes Waheen Market

Flames were visible at the main market in the city of Hargeisa.

Market Burns

Friday April 1st, 8 pm - 3 am

Somaliland Fire Brigade battles the intense flames

Senior government officials remain on the ground to support the first responders as they battle the flames.

Blaze Under Control

Saturday April 2nd, 3 am - Saturday afternoon

Blaze mostly contained - small areas being worked on

Crews on the ground continue to fight the fire that engulfed the downtown core. At this time most of the flames have been put out.

Ethiopian delegation led by the Minister of Finance, Hon. Ahmed Shide and accompanied by Minister of Transport, Hon Dagmawit Moges arrive in Hargeisa.

Thursday, April 7th - April 15th

761 Female Traders Recieve Cash Relief

Sahamiye Foundation distributes cash transfers to traders affected by the market fire. Total cash amounts of $313,700 were sent to 761 women traders who have lost their livelihoods in the fire.

Government Distribution of Cash Transfers Commences

Saturday, April 16th

988 Traders Recieve Cash Relief

The Somaliland government starts the distribution of cash transfers of $1.8 M to the traders affected by the Market fire. The first wave included 988 trader identified as the most vulnerable whom recieved payment today.

Government Distribution of cash transfers - 2nd Wave Commences

Saturday, April 28th

1,106 Traders Recieve Cash Relief

The Somaliland government launched 2nd wave of restoring capital lost to Waheen Fire. Amount totalling 6.8 M was distributed to 1,016 traders, 331 female and 685 male with capital losses ranging from $5001-$480,000. Equal amounts injected by the National Committee and Business Committee accounts.
